A LOOK INSIDE THE WORKSHOP

Finding your own visual language is less about inventing something completely new — and more about learning to recognise what you are naturally drawn to.

YOUR VISUAL LANGUAGE IS ALREADY BEGINNING TO FORM

Developing a personal artistic language can feel like something you have to actively search for.

But often, it is already there — in the colours you return to, the shapes that catch your attention, the materials you enjoy working with, and the decisions you make intuitively.

In this workshop, I’ll show you the process I use to create conditions in which these preferences can become visible.

Rather than beginning with a finished image in mind, we’ll create a framework, experiment with different processes, generate material and then learn to observe and respond to what appears.

The aim is to become more aware of your own decisions — and use them as a starting point for developing a visual language that feels personal to you.

EXPERIMENT

Create situations in which unexpected marks, textures and relationships can emerge.

OBSERVE

Step back and notice what attracts you — the colours, shapes, rhythms and contrasts you instinctively respond to.

RESPOND

Use what is already there as the starting point for your next decision, rather than trying to control the finished image from the beginning.

INSIDE THE WORKSHOP

The workshop moves through five connected chapters — from creating a visual framework and experimenting with materials to building images and recognising the decisions that make your work your own.

01 — MY CREATIVE JOURNEY

Finding the roots of a personal practice

I’ll introduce you to my background and the experiences that shaped the way I work today — from design and tattooing to my current painting practice.

02 — CREATING YOUR FRAMEWORK

References, moodboards & colour

We begin by narrowing the possibilities. You’ll gather visual references, build a moodboard and develop a limited colour world based on atmosphere and personal associations rather than traditional colour theory.

03 — GET PHYSICAL

Chance, fluid paint, monoprint & collage

This chapter is about making before judging. Through fluid paint, monoprint, collage and mark making, you’ll create unexpected shapes, textures and fragments — and learn to respond to what emerges.

04 — RECOGNITION & REDUCTION

From experiments to images

We move from generating material to selecting and combining it. You’ll see how I choose a frame, build layers and make decisions around balance, tension, repetition and empty space without planning the finished image in advance.

05 — MOVING FORWARD

Trusting your decisions

Finally, we look at how to recognise recurring choices, know when to stop and continue developing the process independently — allowing your own visual language to evolve through repetition and observation.

ABOUT ME

I'm Julia Rehme, a visual artist based in Berlin.

My background is in design, and for many years my main artistic practice was tattooing. Over time, my work gradually moved away from designing predetermined images and towards a more open, process-based way of working.

Today, painting is at the centre of my practice.

I work with watercolour, gouache, ink, drawing materials, monoprint and collage, often allowing chance to become part of the process.

Rather than beginning with a fixed composition, I create a framework and then respond to what happens within it.

Finding Your Visual Voice grew out of this way of working — and out of my interest in how repeated choices can slowly become a recognisable artistic language.
